Myanmar Discovers Promising Offshore Gas Reserves Estimated at 106 Trillion Cubic Feet

Myanmar has discovered promising natural gas reserves in offshore areas of the Ayeyarwady and Tanintharyi regions, with the two blocks estimated to contain up to 106 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, according to information released by the President’s Office News and Information Bureau.
Myanmar currently produces natural gas from several offshore projects. In addition to existing shallow-water fields, geologists have confirmed the presence of substantial gas deposits in deepwater offshore areas based on 3D seismic surveys and exploratory drilling results.
The government said the country’s four existing offshore projects have contributed significantly to electricity generation, fertilizer production, and industrial manufacturing, supporting national economic development.
Authorities are now working to develop four additional offshore projects. Among them, the Ayeyarwady and Tanintharyi offshore blocks are considered particularly promising due to their large gas reserves and strong commercial potential.
The Ayeyarwady offshore deepwater project has been confirmed through exploratory and appraisal wells and is estimated to contain up to 14 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas. Preparations are underway for commercial production.
Meanwhile, the Tanintharyi offshore deepwater block has been confirmed as a gas-bearing area, with an estimated 95 trillion cubic feet of natural gas at a 90 percent confidence level (P90). Further exploratory drilling will be conducted to determine the exact size of the reserves before commercial development proceeds.
