Cambodia – Thy Sovantha, husband jailed for three years over Facebook posts deemed harmful to army

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday sentenced social media personality Thy Sovantha and her husband, Phae Sovannarith, to three years in prison each after finding them guilty of posting Facebook content deemed harmful to the military and national security.
Presiding Judge Tithsothy Borachhath ruled that the couple was guilty of “demoralization of the army” under Article 472 of Cambodia’s Criminal Code.
According to the court, the charges stemmed from a series of social media posts made during heightened tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border, where clashes between the armed forces of the two countries occurred in December 2025.
The judge said the couple was arrested by the Internal Security Police on December 15, 2025, shortly after the posts were published.
Prosecutors alleged that the Facebook posts contained harmful information that undermined the morale of the armed forces and affected national security.
The court handed down three-year prison terms to both defendants.
The verdict comes as Cambodian authorities have stepped up enforcement against the spread of online content considered to threaten public order, national security or the armed forces, particularly following last year’s border clashes.
