Cambodian singer and actress Sin Yubin has been appointed as UNICEF Cambodia’s first-ever National Ambassador, marking a milestone in the UN agency’s efforts to strengthen advocacy for children’s rights and wellbeing.

The appointment was announced during a UNICEF event marking International Children’s Day in Phnom Penh. The June 1 celebrations were attended by government officials, development partners, artists and youth representatives.

While accepting the role, Yubin described the appointment as both an honour and a responsibility. She pledged to use her influence and public platform to protect and advocate for Cambodian children.

“This is not merely an honour, but a humanitarian mission and a moral responsibility,” she said.

“I will use my voice and influence to become a shield for every Cambodian child,” she added.

Yubin has worked with UNICEF since 2022, visiting schools, health centres, remote communities and crisis-affected areas. She said those experiences exposed her to challenges facing children, including cyberbullying, mental health issues, malnutrition, unequal access to education and child marriage.

She also recounted meeting children displaced by recent border tensions, some of whom remain traumatised despite returning home.

During the event, first lady Pich Chanmony congratulated Yubin on her appointment and encouraged her to continue using her public influence to promote children’s rights and wellbeing.

Chanmony emphasised that protecting children is a shared responsibility and urged artists, content creators and public figures to use their platforms to raise awareness about child protection, education and mental health.

“Protecting children is not the responsibility of any single institution alone, but a shared responsibility of the government, development partners, the private sector, civil society organisations, artists, content creators and society as a whole,” she said.

She noted that children need not only material support but also compassion, guidance and positive role models, particularly in an increasingly digital world.

As UNICEF Cambodia’s first national ambassador, Yubin pledged to work alongside the organisation to amplify children’s voices and mobilise greater public support for their rights and future.

“I will stand beside Cambodian children and use every platform available to advocate for their fundamental rights,” she said.
