PHNOM PENH – Norakvattey, a 19-year-old law student, had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in diplomatic discussions during her Girl Takeover Day as the German Ambassador to Cambodia.
She is currently a third-year student in the English language-based Bachelor of Laws program at the Royal University of Law and Economics.
Under the guidance of Stefan Messerer, who is current German Ambassador, Norakvattey successfully completed a full day of diplomatic duties.
After engaging in discussions ranging from gender equality to women’s leadership in both the public and private sectors, Norakvattey challenged herself by discussing key topics with high-ranking officials—topics crucial to strengthening ties between Cambodia and Germany.
“As a student, learning things like this is quite difficult, but it is also an opportunity to expose myself to diplomatic work. It goes beyond work and serves as a mirror of understanding between Cambodia and Germany,” Norakvattey said.
Ambassador Messerer praised her as a representative of ambitious and empowered young Cambodian people.
“Women can achieve everything that men can achieve. Women might still be a bit too hesitant, and they might underestimate their capabilities, but they are actually capable of doing everything,” he said.
However, he intended to see more young people in diplomacy because they bring fresh, innovative ideas and perspectives different from those of older generations.
Over the past several years, Messerer has observed the need for Cambodia to encourage more women to take on top positions, but he is certain the country is working toward that goal.
“Gender equality is not yet fully visible. For instance, in the government, there are only a few women in top decision-making positions. However, it is good to see that the number of women entering decision-making roles is growing,” he said.
