PHNOM PENH – The National Election Committee (NEC) has just issued a decision to completely reject the Candlelight Party’s voter registration after it did not meet all the conditions of the election law.

The NEC decision states that as of May 08, 2023, the NEC has received a total of 20 applications for registration of political parties.

According to the law, the NEC has 7 days to review 10 documents in accordance with Article 27 of the Law on the National Assembly Election, and all political parties have 5 days to fill in the missing documents and correct them after receiving them.

A party that meets all the conditions set by the NEC is officially registered, and if any party does not meet all the conditions, the NEC decides not to register the party.

In this regard, the NEC found that 15 parties had submitted sufficient and correct documents in accordance with the requirements of the law, and the NEC decided to approve the registration of these 15 parties.

Separately, a total of five parties, including the Khmer Anti-Poverty Party, the Khmer Economic Development Party, the Candlelight Party, the Women’s Party for Women and the Khmer National Unity Party, received requests to complete and correct documents.

The NEC decided to recognize and register all the parties – except for the Candle Party, which did not do enough, and the NEC decided to reject the registration of the Candle Party on the morning of May 15, 2023.

A statement from the NEC stated that the remaining party, the Khmer National Unity Party, is still due to the NEC’s lack of documents and requested a supplement on May 13, 2023. .

The NEC stated that it implements only one standard: the law, the law is strict, but it is the law.

In this case, legal experts said that the National Election Committee, the supreme body, is enshrined in the constitution, technical and law enforcement institutions, and not political institutions.
