Malaysia news portal FMT joins hands with global freelancing facilitator

PETALING JAYA, Malaysia: A new collaboration between FMT and a leading freelance-hiring specialist will see a boost for the gig economy in Malaysia, as local companies opt for more cost-effective measures in embracing the new employment landscape in the digital era.

Workana, a Latin American company which started in 2012, has been connecting thousands of companies with qualified freelancers worldwide.

The company recently set up its South East Asian headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, taking advantage of Putrajaya’s recent drive to embrace the gig economy as part of the national agenda.

Last year, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the government would recognise the gig economy as a new source of economic growth under its 12th Malaysia Plan, with a special committee connecting three ministries to address various issues.

The government said new laws would also be introduced to protect over 200,000 gig economy workers, most of whom are freelancers for popular e-hailing and food delivery companies.

FMT, among the top current affairs websites in Malaysia, said its collaboration with Workana will make use of its wide readership as well as its strength in content dissemination using a variety of online channels.

“We believe this collaboration will open doors to empowering people by giving them freedom to work where and when they want, while allowing businesses to have a diverse pool of flexible talents at their disposal,” said the news portal’s CEO, Rajendran Menon.

Meanwhile, Workana CEO Tomas O’Farrell welcomed the collaboration.

“We are very excited about this collaboration with FMT. The world is changing before our eyes, with more people joining the gig economy and choosing their economic independence.”
