BALI, Indonesia – Hindus bring offerings and sacred objects to the Margarana Heroes Cemetery in Tabanan, Bali, on Tuesday. A traditional ceremony was held to pray for the spirits of Balinese soldiers who perished during the Battle of Margarana, when I Gusti Ngurah Rai and his Ciung Wanara battalion, numbering less than one hundred, committed a puputan (last stand) against the advancing Dutch army. More than 400 Dutch soldiers were also killed during the battle.
