SEMARANG, Indonesia – Semarang Polytechnic University student A Nur Fatkhul Cholbi gave up a university scholarship and had to pay his own way to the WorldSkills Asia 2018 competition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. But all his efforts are paid off now that he’s won gold!
Cholbi outdid nine other competitors from Malaysia, the Philippines and India in a race to build a refrigeration machine that can be used to create ice rinks.
The youngest child in a family of farmers, Cholbi took a huge risk when he gave up a university scholarship to prepare for the international competition.
His nine-month training violated the requirements for his scholarship at Semarang Polytechnic University.
Cholbi also used up all his winnings from previous competitions and borrowed money to pay for his plane tickets to Abu Dhabi.
But his effort seems to have paid off. Apart from the gold medal, he also won Rp 27,000,000 ($1850) in cash from the Education and Culture Ministry, and scholarships to continue his schooling in Indonesia or abroad.
Indonesia also won five other medals during the WorldSkills Asia 2018.
