PHNOM PENH – More than 100,000 Cambodian workers have returned from Thailand through the Daung International Border in Battambang province on Aug. 6, taking the number of returnees to over 550,000 in 12 days.

A day earlier, more than 100,000 returned through the same border gate, according to the Information Ministry on Aug. 6, citing Battambang Governor Sok Lou.

The ministry reported that Soeum Bunrith, Deputy Governor and spokesperson for the provincial administration, had noted that more than 450,000 people returned from July 25 to Aug. 5 due to the military clashes.

The number, therefore, reached over 550,000 returnees in total by Aug. 6.

The governor urged authorities and police to welcome the returnees and to facilitate their homecoming, helping them with transporting people’s packs and keeping order.

Since Thailand’s closed the border on June 7, the Cambodian government has encouraged people who were staying in Thailand for work or studies to come back home for their safety, avoiding possible assaults — physical or verbal —by extremist groups in Thailand.

From June 8 to Aug. 5, over 670,000 Cambodian workers returned, according to the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training who is actively promoting opportunities for over 250,000 jobs in place, and skill trainings for the workers across the country.

Senate President Hun Sen is offering full scholarships for students who wish to continue their studies at local institutions.

As of Aug. 4, around 601 Cambodian students had come back from Thailand, according to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. Of these, 172 received a full scholarship to continue their studies.

The rest also have the ministry’s support to fill in applications for the scholarships, ensuring they can complete their degrees.
