Thailand, Cambodia – Calls for peace abound, genuinely or hypocritically

BANGKOK – As Thailand and Cambodia exchange fire, pleas for peaceful solutions and halting of aggression are pouring in from virtually all corners of the world, in some cases pretentiously.
The hypocrisy is not an immediate problem. But it can be a root cause of why human beings ultimately have to resort to violence to “end” conflicts. Some of the calls for peace have come from countries that have some of the world’s biggest defence spending and lucrative military industries and often conducted hit-and-run incursions carried out under the guise of preemption of something worse.
That said, genuine peace has to be restored between Thailand and Cambodia. The growing tragedy must be stopped. It’s not because others are calling for it, but because their own citizens are needing it.
