SIEM REAP — Nealy 60,000 tourists came to the Angkor Archeological Park on March 22 to watch the equinox appearing over the Angkor Wat temple for the second day in a row. Among them, around 5,000 visitors were Cambodian tourists, according to the Siem Reap Tourism Department.

The Angkor Equinox in Angkor Park is a phenomenon consisting of the sun perfectly aligning to illuminate the central tower of the Angkor Wat temple. Taking place twice a year, the March equinox of the dry season, which happens between March 21 and March 23, is formally known as the Vernal Equinox, while the second one known as the Autumnal Equinox takes place in September during the rainy season.

Each year, the Cambodian authorities inform the public several days in advance as to when the Angkor Equinox will to happen so that people who wish to attend can make plans to do so. Following this year’s announcement of the dates of the equinox, around 16,000 visitors, including around 3,500 foreigners, were at Angkor Wat on March 21 to watch the phenomenon on its first day.
