1 million riel reward for Cambodian athlete who won heart of the nation

Cambodian runner Bou Sammang – who captured the hearts of Cambodians with her gutsy performance in the SEA Games on Wednesday, when she refused to give up in torrential rain – has received a 1 million riel ($250) reward from Khieu Kanharith, Minister of Information
The Minister handed over the money to the brave athlete at 10:00 AM today.

Earlier, His Majesty the King of the Kingdom of Cambodia praised the young athlete, saying “Sport is more than winning and losing”
Miss Bou Samnang has won hearts all over Cambodia and the world as she bravely ran through her tears in the 5000 metres race on Wednesday night – refusing to give up and battling to finish despite heavy rains.
Despite finishing last, the young Cambodian heroine refused to give up as she ran in the downpour at the Olympic Stadium on the evening of May 8, 2023.
Wearing number 401 – and wearing her emotions all over her face – Miss Bou gave a brave and emotional display, shedding tears as she finished the gruelling race.
After she finished, Miss Bou proudly waved the Cambodian flag to salute supporters who witnessed a truly inspirational performance.
Now fans and national and international journalists are sharing images and video of this brave athlete who epitomises the qualities of Cambodia – ‘the small country with a big heart’ – never to give up, despite adversity.
