Thailand’s Public Health Ministry will carry the medical marijuana hub policy into effect, following an idea from Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and push the plant as a major industrial crop, the Medical Services Department Chief stated yesterday, October 29th.

Director-General Somsak Ankasil told the Associated Press that the Department of Medical Services and the Ministry of Public Health will follow the plan of pushing a medical marijuana policy into effect, starting from November 10th. In this case, marijuana will be widely used for medical purposes and developed as a major industrial crop which could potentially boost the domestic economy and creditability of medical treatments in Thailand.

“Previously, the government has legalized opening medical marijuana clinics across the country and allowing people to grow and produce the cannabis product, generating more than 7 billion baht in the past year,” Somsak stated.

The Ministry now aims to accelerate the progress of important policies, especially for Thailand to become a medical hub for medical marijuana treatment with internationally recognized cannabis-based medicines use and production.

In addition, pushing Thai medical marijuana will also likely help revitalize the tourism industry and solve Thai people’s financial problems, according to his statement.

Dr. Somsak stated: “Nowadays, people’s perspective towards marijuana has slightly shifted and they tend to understand the benefits of the plant more.”

“Most importantly, we now have established the International Medical Cannabis Research Center (IMCRC) with the cooperation of the private sector, the government, and specialist doctors in medical marijuana to be a source of knowledge, research, extraction as well as a hub for the cannabis production under the international standard. This will help drive medical marijuana in Thailand and will become another attraction for foreign tourists and investors to Thailand.”
