A 32-year farmer was arrested a few hours after insulting Prime Minister Hun Sen on his Facebook page on Monday.
The account holder, identified as Huon Borey from Phnom Proek district in Battambang province, was picked by the district police after Battambang Provincial police chief Major General Sat Kimsan sought permission from Battambang Provincial Court prosecutor Keu Bunnara.
The arrest was made on Monday afternoon by the Phnom Proek district police in cooperation with the provincial police.
Deputy provincial police chief in charge of criminal investigation Lieutenant Colonel Lim Puthyla said that upon being arrested, Borey admitted that he posted Mr Hun Sen’s picture on his Facebook page on Monday (March 29) and used derogatory words to insult him.
The suspect has been sent to the Battambang Provincial Court for legal action.
According to police, this is not the first time Borey had committed such an offence, as he has done so twice before. He had been counselled not to do so, but he repeated insulted Mr Hun Sen which resulted in the authorities initiating legal action.
Lt Col Puthyla told Khmer Times: “The police recorded his statement and referred him to the court. If Borey is convicted, then he will have to face his sentence.”
Battambang Provincial Court spokeswoman Chea Chanrasmey said it has not yet been decided under which section of the law they will charge Borey.
