JAKARTA – Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) is preparing to reopen Mount Bromo to tourists in August. The site has been closed since March 19 because of COVID-19.

An active volcano standing 2,329 meters above sea level on the Tengger massif, Mount Bromo stretches across the four regencies of Probolinggo, Pasuruan, Lumajang and Malang.

TNBTS head John Kenedie told kompas.com on Wednesday that the agency was waiting for recommendations for the site’s hours of operation and for health precautions from the four regencies.

John predicted that the national park would reopen in August, giving the agency about a month to prepare health precautions.

He added that the protocols would require visitors to wear face masks and adhere to physical distancing measures. Hand washing facilities would also be provided.

The park will limit the number of visitors to 20 percent of its normal capacity, or 739 people per day. Visitors are required to buy tickets online on the park’s website.

The entrance fees are Rp 29,000 (US$2) and Rp 220,000 for domestic and foreign tourists, respectively, on weekdays, and Rp 34,000 and Rp 320,000 on holidays.

Several tourist attractions in the country have partially reopened to visitors, including in Pangandaran regency in West Java and the Prambanan and Ratu Boko temples in Yogyakarta. (wng)
