The Indian Embassy on Friday organised a roundtable discussion regarding the acceptance of applications for a PhD fellowship to be granted to 1,000 Asean citizens. Details of the application will be disseminated to representatives of 10 universities in the capital.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to study at renowned Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) – India’s foremost technical education centres.

The conference is a result of last year’s announcement by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 25th Asean-India Commemorative Summit in New Delhi where he announced the PhD fellowship programme to be granted to students from Asean countries.

Nomesh Bolia, a mechanical engineering professor at one of the participating institutes, IIT Delhi, said the fellowship does not allocate a quota for the number of accepted applicants from each member state.

Their acceptance will be contingent upon the applicants’ qualification and interest in the programme.

IIT Delhi offers a variety of courses ranging from Information Technology (IT), Management, Economics, Psychology, and Political Science.

Applicants will be asked to submit an application form with their photo, a biography, study documents, school records, and letter of recommendation from previous professors.

English proficiency certificates like the IELTS will not be necessary as the applicants would be tested and interviewed online.

“This is the first time that the Indian government grants Asean students scholarships to study at Indian Institutes of Technology. India is popular for IT. That’s why we focused our scholarships on IT. But applicants can still apply for other fields [offered at the IITs],” Bolia said.

IIT Delhi said it has educated about 50,000 Indian students who had become engineers, technicians, scientists, managers, and entrepreneurs. IIT Delhi was recognised as the best technical institute in India last year.

Indian embassy second secretary Adarsh Kumar Mishra said the Indian government-sponsored fellowship would help strengthen ties between India and other Asean countries.

“We want to build capacity for students in the 10 Asean nations by providing them with scholarship opportunities [so they can] return and help develop their countries. We can also strengthen relations between India and Asean nations,” Mishra said.

The second round of acceptance of applications will commence from December of this year and end in March 2020. Applicants can submit their applications online at http://asean.iitd.ac.in.
