Indonesia Briefing: Paving the Way Forward 2019-2024

LONDON, Nov 12 – Indonesia saw the world’s largest democratic election and the beginning on the second term of President Joko Widodo   and the UK is engaging the world in a new era of partnerships. The Forum provided an opportunity to reflect on the partnership of the island nations to chart a new path forward in a global environment.

Paving the Way Forward 2019-2024, an annual briefing gave  a fascinating and timely insight into Indonesia’s economic and political policies for the next five years.

The flagship forum provided a valuable insight into Indonesia’s long-term vision for the development of its economy based on a broad programme of reform to enable growth and prosperity, whilst maintaining its commitment to carbon reduction.

Guests heard  from Indonesia’s leading experts and practitioners from academia, government and finance. Guest speakers included HE Dr Rizal Sukma, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the UK, who delivered the keynote address; Dr Aida Budiman, Executive Director for Economics and Monetary Policy at the Central Bank of Indonesia; Dr Ninasapti Triaswati, Senior Economist and Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economic and Business, University of Indonesia; and HE Muhammad Lutfi, President Commissioner of MedcoEnergi. The event was moderated moderated by Pooma Kimis (Director Autonomous Research).

Discussions also explored how Indonesia can play a strategic role for the UK in Southeast Asia and beyond. The event continued this year’s celebration of 70 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the United Kingdom which commenced in December 1949. The two countries maintain strong links, from trade and investment to education, arts and culture.
