PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – The Cambodian dancers finished their final day of practice at the Olympic Stadium on Friday (Feb. 8). Under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts (MCFA) and the Union of Youth Federation of Cambodia (UYFC), they will participate in the Chingay Parade Singapore (Feb. 15 and 16).
Phoeung Sakona, Culture Minister, and Hun Many, UYFC president, were present at the final rehearsal, and spoke with reporters afterward.
Mr Many stated that the participation of Cambodian performers in the parade is very important because it showcases traditional Khmer dance and Cambodian culture. International spectators will be able to recognize that Cambodia has had a very high level of culture and civilization for centuries.
Minister Phoeung Sakona expects the Cambodian performance to find interest and acknowledgement on an international level, and sees it as an honour and a matter of pride for the nation. “Our delegations and performers are well prepared to participate in, and perform at, the event.”
The annual event was initiated in 1973 by former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and is still organized by the Singaporean People’s Association. It is one of Asia’s largest street performance and float parades, and the colourful epitome of Singapore’s multi-cultural society.
