Yoga Day celebrations to be held across Indonesia

By JESSICHA VALENTINA The Jakarta Post Tuesday May 1, 2018

In September 2014, at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the adoption of the International Day of Yoga.

The proposal was endorsed by 175 member states, which led the United Nations to proclaim June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, popularly known as Yoga Day.

In Indonesia, the International Day of Yoga has been celebrated three times. However, this year, the event is set be even bigger, backed by the support of the Tourism Ministry.

The inaugural event kicked off on April 22 at Malang Muhammadiyah University (UMM) in Malang, East Java, and was followed by various events in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Bali, Surabaya and Medan.

Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said in a statement that yoga was an exercise that focused on strength and breathing to improve one’s mental and physical state. The exercise has attracted many people, including Indonesians. Meanwhile, Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Pradeep Kumar Rawat welcomed everyone to join the Yoga Day’s celebration.

The peak of the celebration is scheduled to be held at Prambanan Temple in Sleman, Yogyakarta, on June 24. This event is expected to welcome around 10,000 participants.

For the main celebration, there will be yoga instructors from India who have been trained in accordance with the International Day of Yoga’s standardized protocol. (kes)
